Founder of Buchlyvie Pottery Shop, Alison Borthwick studied ceramics and printmaking at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen from 1978 – 1982. She returned to Glasgow to set up her pottery business in Glasgow in 1983 where she started building up her range of hand made porcelain tableware, giftware and lighting. In 1989 Alison moved her family and business to the beautiful village of Buchlyvie to expand into retail. Having recently celebrated 30 YEARS in the pottery business Alison Borthwick Porcelain now produces no less than 5 extensive ranges in original designs, beautifully hand painted by Alison herself.
Using a variety of techniques largely inspired by Japanese paintings and brushstrokes plus striking use of underglaze colours. each piece in hand carved or skillfully painted then fired to a final temperature of 1280 centigrade. The high temperature produces a finish both robust and translucent and allows the items to be Oven, Dishwasher and Microwave Proof.
Reflecting our ethos of using only quality materials and local produce, all meals and dishes on offer in the Coffee Kiln are hand made on the premises.
