Founder of Buchlyvie Pottery Shop, Alison Borthwick studied ceramics and printmaking at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen from 1978 – 1982. She returned to Glasgow to set up her pottery business in Glasgow in 1983 where she started building up her range of hand made porcelain tableware, giftware and lighting. In 1989 Alison moved her family and business to the beautiful village of Buchlyvie to expand into retail.
Alison herself creates the plaster models and moulds from which the prorcelain products originate. 
Each new piece is hand turned on a lathe or wheel and polished until as smooth as marble. Using a variety of decorative techniques, largely inspired by Japanese paintings and brush strokes, plus sensitive but striking use of colour, each piece is painted by hand then fired to a final temperature of 12600°C, producing a finish which is both robust and translucent.
The high firing temperature, combined with the materials used, create the unique quality that is porcelain - an alchemists dream!
Having just celebrated its 20 year anniversary, Buchlyvie Pottery Shop is still a working pottery where Alison now produces no less than seven extensive ranges of hand painted tableware, giftware, wall plaques, bespoke tile panels and also fine porcelain jewellery.
The combined shop and workshop is open plan allowing customers the opportunity to meet the makers and watch them work.
Buchlyvie lies just 20 miles north of Glasgow on the A811 halfway between Stirling and Loch Lomond. There are some good watering holes and a lovely tea room nearby plus a stunning backdrop of the Trossach National Park which make it well worth a visit!
All products and designs are suitable for oven, dishwasher and microwave use. Due to the many processes involved in the production of handmade pottery, slight variations may occur in the colour, surface and decoration of the pots. These variations form the individuality and charm of each item.
