ALISON BORTHWICK PORCELAIN
The combined shop and studio is openplan offering the public the opportunity to meet and watch the potters at work. Alison herself designs and creates the hard plaster models from which the models originate. Each new piece is hand turned on a lathe or wheel then polished smooth to a marble like quality before the original moulds are made. The piece is then slipcast, fetted and sponged then bisque fired and wet polished or glazed before being decorated by hand, using a variety of techniques. A retrospective exhibition by Alison Borthwick Largely inspired by Japanese paintings and brushstrokes, each piece is skillfully hand painted. Sensitive but striking use of colour and textural effects complete the look. The final glaze firing reaches 1280°C, producing pottery with a unique translucent though surpisingly robust finish. All items are then suitable for oven, dishwasher and microwave use (plus of course everyday wear and tear). Due to the processes involved in handmade pottery, slight variations and imperfections may occur in the colour, surface and decoration of the pots. These help to form the individual quality and charm of each pot. |
There several good watering holes and a gallery/tearoom in the village. Stunning views across to the Trossachs National Park as a backdrop make it well worth a visit. |
